Kehulili O Kailani Ho'ike 2010

Aloha! This past weekend was my hula halau's annual ho'ike & potluck luau. We've been working hard all year long learning the choreography to new songs and sewing our costumes, and it was so special that we were able to perform as a group in front of all of our family & friends! It was a wonderful aloha-spirit filled afternoon. Here are a couple of photos of the day!

Sammy & I before the show started
All ready to begin... Sammy & Andrew are enjoying some of the luau food!
Our class - the Alaka'i - performing the kahiko chant Maika'i Kaua'i Hemolele I Ka Malie
This dance featured feathered gourds called uli uli - they are Sammy's favorite things to play with!
Here's my little keiki waiting for the next song to begin
I loved this dress! Such a pretty song. We had live musicians perform "I love Kauai" and "Hanalei Moon" for us in this costume.
We also performed a couple of maori numbers, and then finished with this Tahiatian Otea. This one was very lively and fun to perform!
If you'd like to see this one on video, check out my facebook page! :)

it's so special whenever the whole family can be gathered together, & this particular afternoon was a perfect example of that. sammy & all his cousins loved watching you, as did the rest of us :-) i couldn't help but think what a seasoned dancer you are now, what with your beginning decades ago... all those years & years of weekly lessons... what a gift you received, discovering & nurturing this talent! kumu ginger imparted so much to your passion, & your kumus honor her memory with their own special talents & love for polynesia. great job, mapuana! love you, mom
